Life is all about choices. We make thousands of them every day. Admittedly many are what you could call ‘default’ choices. These are just preferences that we set sometime in the past. But even though we don’t consciously go through the decision process with them, they are still choices technically.

Then there are conscious choices – decisions that take a second or two. Like – which chair to sit in while waiting for the doctor. Then there are ‘considered’ choices – ones you think about (or argue about with your spouse!). Next up are ‘major’ decisions. They would include things like buying a vehicle or moving to a better apartment. But the topping the list are BIG decisions. These deal with life choices like choosing a career, getting married, buying a house, or having children. The bigger the decision, the more critical it is that we get it right. Here are five questions that you should answer when considering any significant decision:

1. What does the Word of God say about it? Would following through with this choice cause you to contradict Scripture? This will keep you from immorality.

2.  Does it take you further in God’s purpose for your life (as far as you understand it) or farther away? This will keep you from wasting time.

3. How will it affect those closest to me? How will they be affected in the short term? Long term? This will keep you from acting selfishly.

4. Is it the right time? In some situations timing is paramount. What are the implications if you move now? What if you wait a while? This will keep you from being impulsive.

5. Have you prayed about it? Have you brought this to God repeatedly with an open mind to doing whatever he wants for you? Are you fairly sure you know his heart on it?  This will save you from lying awake at night after you commit to the decision.
