“And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness” Rom 6:18
The pursuit of revival is in many ways a quest for freedom. But it’s not until we realize that we are in bondage that we seriously desire to be free. Is it possible to be a prisoner and not know it? Absolutely! In fact, not only can we be so conditioned that we don’t recognize our bondage, we can become so used to our chains that we wouldn’t know what to do without them!
You see, most people think that freedom means the ability to do whatever you want. But the Bible shows us that following this definition only leads us into slavery to our “wants”. And our desires can be a sick and twisted master! Real freedom is the ability to do what we should – not what we want. It is when we realize that we are unable to do what we know we should that we begin to long for the kind of freedom that only Christ can provide – freedom from sin. It is sin that imprisons us with fears, obsessions, shame and guilt, and violent emotions. But when Jesus sets us free, we are free to experience true joy, real love, and unbounded hope! And that’s a freedom worth fighting for.
