“Let us make a small upper room on the wall; and let us put a bed for him there, and a table and a chair and a lampstand; so it will be, whenever he comes to us, he can turn in there.” 2 Kings 4:10
In the age of the kings, the prophet of God was highly respected by everyone from the lowest farmer to the royal courts. Elisha was one of the most powerful men of his time. He had Elijah’s ‘double anointing’. The Bible records that he did twice as many miracles as Elijah. Most people understood that an audience with Elisha was almost like an audience with God himself!
So when the Shunamite woman decided to make a room for him in her home, she was really making a place for God in her life. The story has a lot to teach us. In order to make a place for God in your life:
1. You need a bed. A bed is a quiet place of rest. To meet with God we need to put off our work clothes, step out of the hustle bustle, and learn to quiet our minds enough for our spirit to rise up. It doesn’t matter where you do this as long as, like your bed, you go there daily. 1 Pet 3:4
2. You need a table. “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of God.” This is where you feed yourself daily on the Word. Read the word systematically, study the Word intelligently, go to the Word frequently, speak the Word habitually, and live the Word passionately.
3. You need a chair. This is about knowing who you are in Christ. Eph 2: 5 says that we are seated together in heavenly places in Christ. Understanding how the sacrifice of Christ has made you acceptable to God and how Christ’s righteousness becomes yours, are vital keys to coming before him like you belong there.
4. You need a lamp. In Elisha’s day a lampstand was symbolic of the Holy Spirit. We make room for God in our lives by stirring ourselves up in the Spirit daily – worshipping, praying in tongues, and speaking to God throughout the day.
Like the Shunamite woman, if you make a place for God in your life he will just show up all the more often. And he will want to bless you. Lam 3:25 “The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him”. More than that, he will work supernaturally in your life to make all you touch more fruitful. Not only was her son brought back to life, but she was restored to her lands and given seven years income! Make a place for God in your life – he will restore what you’ve lost too!
